About This Item
This is a luxury edition of The Magic Mountain, written by the Thomas Mann (1875-1955), who won the 1929 Nobel Prize in Literature. This classic novel, about career invalids snowbound in the Swiss Alps, was first published in 1924 and it is considered to be one of the most influential works of 20th century German literature.
This copy was published by the Franklin Library in 1981. Although it has a bookplate on the inside front cover, (which you can easily cover) it does not appear to have been read. It has no odor, but it has come in contact with water at some point; some of the front pages are waved and the gold edging has come off portions of the sides.
It has a bound-in silk bookmark which was undisturbed until today. It is heavily illustrated in pen and ink sketches by the famed Uruguayan sculptor Gonzalo Fonseca.
It is beautifully-made, with a leather spine moving onto the covers, and a gold design on the spine and covers. It is 724 pages and weighs 3 lbs. Lovely book.
Note: I also have a 1957 copy of The Beloved Returns (Lotte in Weimar) listed here, as well as a first edition of The Holy Sinner, and a first edition of Joseph the Provider.
