About This Item

This is a luxury edition of The Magic Mountain, written by the Thomas Mann (1875-1955), who won the 1929 Nobel Prize in Literature. This classic novel, about career invalids snowbound in the Swiss Alps, was first published in 1924 and it is considered to be one of the most influential works of 20th century German literature.

This copy was published by the Franklin Library in 1981. Although it has a bookplate on the inside front cover, (which you can easily cover) it does not appear to have been read. It has no odor, but it has come in contact with water at some point; some of the front pages are waved and the gold edging has come off portions of the sides.

It has a bound-in silk bookmark which was undisturbed until today. It is heavily illustrated in pen and ink sketches by the famed Uruguayan sculptor Gonzalo Fonseca.

It is beautifully-made, with a leather spine moving onto the covers, and a gold design on the spine and covers. It is 724 pages and weighs 3 lbs. Lovely book.

Note: I also have a 1957 copy of The Beloved Returns (Lotte in Weimar) listed here, as well as a first edition of The Holy Sinner, and a first edition of Joseph the Provider.

Synopsis

Thomas Mann was born in 1875 in Germany. He was only twenty-five when his first novel, Buddenbrooks , was published. In 1924 The Magic Mountain was published, and, five years later, Mann was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. Following the rise of the Nazis to power, he left Germany for good in 1933 to live in Switzerland and then in California, where he wrote Doctor Faustus (first published in the United States in 1948). Thomas Mann died in 1955.
