Originally published in four volumes in 1933-8, this edition first thus complete in two volumes: vol. I first impression, vol. II an early printing of 1955. A panegyric biography of John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough, by Winston Churchill, who was a lineal descendant of the duke. The initial draft appeared in 1932, and passed to Edward Marsh to edit. Providing a biography of the life of the duke, as well as painting a picture of English Restoration and Europe in the time of Charles II. Volume II in its unclipped dust wrapper, lacking to vol. I. With frontispieces and numerous illustrations, maps, and plans throughout, some folding. In the original publisher's full cloth binding. Externally very smart with only minor shelf wear and a minor bumping to the head and tail of the spine and extremities. Vol. II with minor faint damp markings to the boards, and a minor creasing to the lower right corner of the front board. Library shelf number inked to the spine of vol. II. The dust wrapper of vol. II is sound with some shelf wear, minor chipping, and sunning to the spine, library shelf number inscribed to the spine. Tape repairing internally to the wraps. Vol. I previous owner's gift inscription to the front free endpaper, dated 1947.Librray stamps to the endpapers and imprint page of vol. II, a small slip tipped in to the front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. The pages are bright and clean. With frontispieces and numerous illustrations, maps, and plans throughout, some folding. Very Good
