Introduction by Richard Cary, Colby College, Maine. 1st edition. Softcover. 384 pages. 5 1/2" x 8 1/4" x 1". Weight: 1 lb. 1 oz. The cover of this Black & Gold Edition is cloth bound linen like. The pages are printed on Cambridge Perma-Paper, a stock expressly manufactured for the Cambridge Classics Library. The paper is specially treated to obtain maximum permanence from natural fibres. The 20 page Folio in the centre of the book is printed on paper containing genuine Laid Mark with homespun embossing. Contains an introduction by Richard Cary, preface, the novel, and a 20 page folio in the center of the book which includes information such as: Portrait of Thomas Hardy, Chronology, The World in which Thomas Hardy Lived, Selected Critical Comments, Principal Works of Thomas Hardy, The first edition, in original binding (photo), Title Page, The First Edition, The First American Edition, In Original Binding, Advertisement from Century Magazine, 1905, Thomas Hardy Photographs, "Max Gate", The Wessex Country Map, Acknowledgements. The cover has crease on front and 1/4" tear on back and store label but is otherwise in Very Good+ condition. The inside pages are crisp and bright in near fine condition.
