About This Item

Dublin: By Robert Marchbank, for John Milken and John Stockdale, 1801. First edition. Leather. Very Good. 11" by 9". Not Stated. An excellent copy of the first edition of politician Richard Musgrave's anticatholic account of late eighteenth century Irish history, an influential and controversial work. Illustrated with folding maps. The first edition of Sir Richard Musgrave's historical and political study of the history of Irish rebellions, with 'a Particular Detail of that which broke out the 23rd of May, 1798; the History of the Conspiracy which preceded it, and the Characters of the Principal Actors in it'.Illustrated with nine plates, eight of which are folding maps. Lacking plate VII 'A ground plan of Ross, and a map of the adjacent country', which should appear facing page 407.Retaining the original half title. With the armorial bookplate of James Martin to the front pastedown, and a contemporary owner's inscription to the verso of the half title. In 1894, the Dictionary of National Biography claimed the work was 'so steeped in anticatholic prejudice as to be almost worthless historically', terming him 'a man of considerable talent, warped by blind prejudice and savage party spirit'. In a full calf binding. Externally, smart, with rubbing to boards, back strip and joints. Front hinge starting, with board holding firm. Armorial bookplate to front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Inscription to verso of half title. Pages generally clean and bright, with the odd spot. Closed tear to frontispiece folding map. Very Good
