London, Henry Colburn, 1830. Two volumes, 8vo. Contemporary fine olive-green full calf, ornamented in gilt, each spine with two morocco lettering pieces; pp. x, 330; [ii], 366, engraved portrait-frontispiece and two large folding panoramas in aquatint; occasional spotting, but a very attractive set with contemporay engraved armorial bokplates inside front covers.. Van Halen, a Spanish soldier and adventurer can be described as an 19th-century condottiere, who was in charge of a Dragoon Regiment in Tbilisi, Georgia. He fought in the Caucasus campaign in 1820, serving the Armenian prince Valerian Madatov against the troops of Surghai Khan (later replaced by Ashan Khan) in the Kazikoumik region of Daghestan.
