London: John Macrone,, 1838. First edition of the memoirs of the soldier and inventor Francis Maceroni (1788–1846). "Maceroni recommended himself to Joachim Murat, king of Naples, who on 1 January 1814 made him one of his aides-de-camp, with the rank of colonel of cavalry, and sent him on missions to London, where he was when Murat's forces were defeated by the Austrians at Tolentino in May 1815" (ODNB). Two volumes, octavo (212 x 133 mm). Contemporary black morocco-grained roan, flat raised bands, spine lettered in gilt, compartments richly gilt, boards elaborately decorated in gilt and blind, all edges gilt, yellow endpapers. Engraved frontispiece portrait to Volume I. Contemporary gift inscription on front flyleaf. Extremities slightly rubbed, endpapers dust soiled, prelims and endmatters foxed, occasional spotting to text blocks.
