About This Item
New York: Longmans, Green, and Co.,, 1911. First edition, first printing, of this posthumous collection of the American philosopher and psychologist's speeches and essays, most notably "The Moral Equivalent of War", which was first published here in book form. His son, Henry James Jr., provides the preface: "Professor William James formed the intention shortly before his death of republishing a number of popular addresses and essays under the title which this book now bears... I have departed in no substantial degree from my father's idea, except perhaps by including two or three short pieces which were first addressed to special occasions or audiences and which now seem clearly worthy of republication in their original form". Octavo. Original green cloth, paper label to spine printed in black and ruled in red, top edge gilt, others uncut. Spine lightly darkened, minor abrasion to label, light toning to contents. A very good copy. McDermott 1911-2.
