About This Item

London: Jonathan Cape, 1957. second impression. Very Good/very good. Francesco Datini was a merchant who died in 1410, and he left instructions that all his private and business papers should be preserved. They were and not brought to light until 400 years later! The collection was unique, 150,000 letters, 500 ledgers and account books and so on. An invaluable record of medieaval trade. To the historian the importance of this book is obvious, but it is aglow with human interest for every reader. Red boards with writing to spine. Bumping and a little fading.Dj mylar covered, some small tears, rubbed and a bit dirty. Not price clipped 35s.Owner inscribed in ink. Some notations in pencil in back inside cover.Pages clean and tight, some foxing. Many black and white plates throughout. A fascinating book. First Edition AB63
