New York: E.P. Dutton & Co. Inc., 1929. Stated First Edition 8vo size red clothbound hardcover has gilt titles on spine and cover; 230 deckle edged pages. Author Elisabeth Sanxay Holding (18891955) began her career as a writer of romance novels. After almost a decade of romance, Holding switched to the genre of the detective thriller. Miasma was the first detective novel Holding wrote. Holding's work was well received by critics and peers. Author Raymond Chandler, who epitomizes "noir detective" We can't resist quoting blogger Eddie Fitzgerald, commenting on reading first editions of Holding's novels: "The type from the 30s and 40s was elegant, easy to read, and beautifully spaced on the page. The paper was thick and pulpy, and had a nice smell...something like old construction paper. The books felt like the products of craftsmen.
