London: John Lehmann, 1952. 8vo.  190 x 130 mm., [7 1/2 x 5 inches].  189 pp.  Publisher's cloth in blue pictorial dust jacket by John Minton.  Jacket extremities a bit rubbed, the whole rather foxed, especially the verso and rear panel, white portions of the spine showing toning, additional light foxing to textblock edges, else a Very Good, sound copy.

Novel by the Italian author recounting a man's return to his native Piedmont in Italy after attempting to make his fortune in the United States.   Originally published under the title La Luna e i Falo it is considered his master work and appeared the year after his death.

Pavese was an important Italian  translators making  English and American literature accessible to an Italian audience.  He translated Herman Melville, Gertrude Stein and William Faulkner, as well as Daniel Defoe, Charles Dickens and James Joyce.  His edition of Moby Dick appeared in Italy in 1941.
