Hale was a widow with five yound chidlren on her hands when she turned to writing to support herself. After the success of her novel Northwood (1827) she became the editor of Ladies Magazine and still later the editor of Gosley's Ladies Magazine, the most successfull women's periodical of its time. This compilation of useful household formulas and advice was first published as the New Housefold Recipe Book. This 1857 edtion is much enlarged and contains advice for the housewive from caring for houseplants to management of canary birds, and offers recipes from making your own pounce to how to make Nakin color.
