(USA) First Edition Owner's inscription to the yellow endpaper and also to top of the preface, no other markings, small edge tear to page 13 / 14, the hinges are solid but the signatures are slightly misaligned, one signature is loose but still attached by the original sewn thread, the covers are clean with some rubbing to spine extremities, there are three tiny holes to the front spine gutter, the spine titles are bright and readable, overall about Good, given its age. 19 x 12.5 cm, brown blind emboseed boards with gold title titles, yellow endpapers printed with ads, 721pp, index [1] blank, 12pp of publisher's ads. Hale was a widow with five yound chidlren on her hands when she turned to writing to support herself. After the success of her novel Northwood (1827) she became the editor of Ladies Magazine and still later the editor of Gosley's Ladies Magazine, the most successfull women's periodical of its time. This compilation of useful household formulas and advice was first published as the New Housefold Recipe Book. This 1857 edtion is much enlarged and contains advice for the housewive from caring for houseplants to management of canary birds, and offers recipes from making your own pounce to how to make Nakin color. There is a chapter on Cookery receipts and another on courtship and marriage. Uncommon. (2.0 JM HOQ 100/3. 1st. Hardcover. Fair/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
