About This Item
London: The Folio Society, 1977. Hardcover. Very Good. Cloth spine with gilt lettering. 127 pages. Illustrated. No slipcase. Tiny tear in cloth at tail of spine. A clean, attractive book. "A practical training in music, even if not displayed in public, was considered necessary for princes in their role as patrons. Patronage was an aspect of power, and ruler needed to be capable of distinguishing the good from the bad without ministerial advice. Even the least musical of monarchs admitted the necessity of being seen to encourage the arts; architecture was the most permanent form of self-recommendation, painting the most flattering, but there was no more stirring combination of sound and spectacle than music.
