About This Item
Dover Pubns, March 2002. Paper Back. New. We have a weakness for post-Victorian scholarly works like this- you know, the kind where the synopsis of the contents at the beginning of a chapter takes a good half-page by itself. All the more when that work is reprinted countless times, perennially finding an audience. So naturally, we heartily recommend this narrative and analysis of the development of mysticism, first published in 1911. Underhill defines mysticism as the experience of union with God. As she unfolds and refines this spare definition, we begin to see that this state is itself a journey, both historically and in the mystic's experience. The whole story of Western mysticism is laid before us, but we are never left as mere observers: Underhill's compelling personal participation in that journey, which led, between the first and second editions of this book, to her closer identification with the historic church, a more intense emphasis on the uniqueness of Christian mystical experience and the humanity of Christ, and a modifying of her earlier dualism, invites us to make the mystic's experience our own.
