About This Item

[London]: 1675 // London: printed by T. R. and sold by Benj. Tooke, 1676, 1675. Full Leather. Very Good binding. [6], 64, [8], 48, 51-66. Two pamphlets bound together in contemporary Cambridge panel binding; discrete repair to the bottom of the front joint; small leather loss at the head of the spine; Naked Truth is lacking the last leaf; in this edition signature F is imperfectly imposed, but all pages are present if out of order; the "B" of signature B1 is below the space between "I" and "am", a state not noted in Wing; in Animadversions, the preliminary Imprimatur page is present; the irregular pagination is a printer's flaw called for in Wing, the work is complete; 5 stab holes in the inner margin throughout this pamphlet where it was originally stitched prior to being bound; another work was bound in but has been excised at the end and a dozen or more leaves of stubbing is visible; both pamphlets are tightly trimmed occasionally trimming page numbers or a bit of text on both title pages, but no other text is affected; early inscription in Latin on the front free endpaper. Published anonymously, Croft's attack of the Church of England caused quite a stir. Pleased with the tract, Andrew Marvell followed it quickly with his own attack, "Mr. Smirke; or The Divine in Mode." Several responses were issued in short order including Turner's Animadversions, which is bound here with Croft's pamphlet. The two pamphlets present the heated controversies surrounding the Church of England in the 17th century. (Wing C6970; T3275). Very Good binding.
