London: William Crofts, 1836.. First edition, 8vo, iv, 412 pp. 25 lithographic plates - two of which are hand coloured, plus two folding maps hand coloured in outline, errata slip tipped in. Old closed tear to one plate (p. 63), some mostly mild foxing to the plates, one of the maps a little creased. Handsomely bound in modern green half morocco, an attractive copy. A career Naval officer, Gardiner decided to become a missionary and spent four years in South Africa, establishing a missionary station in Port Natal and presiding over the meeting that led to the founding of Durban.
