London: Macmillan and Co, 1891. Presentation copy inscribed by Lord Kelvin on the half title: 'G. G. Ward June 1, 1896 Kelvin' with a subsequent ownership inscription nearby from 'F G Ward'. With the errata slip. Smart green publisher's cloth binding with dark green coated endpapers, clean fresh text throughout, pp512 plus four pages of adverts at the end. This third volume in Kelvin's Nature Series was actually published before the second volume and each is a stand alone publication which forms part of the final sequence. Thomson was a giant of nineteenth century science who did important work in the mathematical analysis of electricity and formulation of the first and second laws of thermodynamics as well as unifying the discipline of physics.
