About This Item

London: James Ridgway & Sons, 1837. Book. Very good- condition. Hardcover. First Edition. Octavo (8vo). xx, 443 pages of text including an index. Original boards are quite darkened, worn and chipped at the extremities, rebacked with a leather spine within the past 30 years. New endpapers. Illustrated with an engraved frontispiece, one fold-out plate (slightly mis-folded and slightly foxed at the folds), and 39 in-text engravings. Institutional stamp on the back of the title page and on the final blank following the index. The text is clean and unmarked. One of the numerous works written during the 19th Century in an attempt to stem the rising tide of scientific evolutionism. The author argues that no early convulsions of the earth, such as those supposed by the geologists, could have taken place because there could have been no deluge "before moral guilt could possibly have been incurred" or to say, before the creation of mankind.
