About This Item

Early Fifth Edition, Second Printing (c. early 1920s). A rare and wonderful copy of this popular very early, with highly desirable cover variant. Part of the "New" Wizard of Oz covers that began in 1903 after the original publication (and first state cover with Lion) in 1900. "New" was dropped from the cover after the Second edition, first printing of 1903, but has appeared on the internal title page since for these very early printings through the early 1930s. 8vo. 7.125" wide by 9 1/16" tall. 208 pp. A terrific copy of this first OZ book with the popular cover. Content internally fine. Covers and boards very good plus to near fine for the age, with only light scuffing, wear and soiling, very light chipping on illustrated cover pastedown and spine head and tail ever so slightly pushed. Cover, same as 4th Edition, including green cloth and dark green cover background. Binding A variant with blue scarecrow (vs. yellow). Lacking the extremely rare jacket. Reset book length at 208 pages. Of the 16 illustrations, eight are full-page color plates (all fine); the remaining black and white. Printer's imprint on the copyright page reads "Press of Braunworth & Co. Book Manufacturers Brooklyn, N.Y." Lettering and lion graphic in black to spine, title-page vignette.
