About This Item
London: J. Debrett, 1794. Paperback. Very good overall. General Clinton's "Observations" is rare. On few occasions it was bound in Stedman's work "The History of the Origin, Progress, and Termination of the American War".
Henry Clinton [1730 - 1795] was a British Army officer and politician, best known as a General and Commander-in-Chief during the Revolutionary War. He was ultimately blamed for the British failure to maintain their hold on the American Colonies.
Charles Stedman [1753-1812] was a British loyalist, born in Philadelphia, who served under Generals Howe, Clinton and Cornwallis. He retired to England in 1783 and settled loyalist claims for the British Government. His book, "The History of the Origin, Progress, and Termination of the American War" is "generally considered the best contemporary account of the Revolution written from the British side" (Sabin).
4to, ii, 34pp, text complete though lacking a portrait mentioned on OCLC. OCLC: 228758310 noting "In this issue line 4 of p. ii contains the phrase "a late Governor General of India." At 5 libraries, Huntington, Case Western, John Carter Brown, Nat Lib Scotland and Univ. of Manchester. ESTC (RLIN),; T096144. 8 1/4 x 10 3/8", disbound, light foxing on last two leaves otherwise very good condition.
