The leading English neurologists of of his time, John Hughlings Jackson (1834-1911), of Harrogate, Yorkshire, "did much to establish the use of the ophthalmoscope in diagnosing brain diseases (1863), made valuable studies of aphasia (1864), described unilateral convulsions or Jacksonian epilepsy (1875), and originated the doctrine of "Levels" in the nervous system(1898)".—Garrison, History of Medicine, pp.695-6.
