About This Item
Dublin: Printed for Messrs. H. Chamberlaine [etc.], 1789. First Dublin edition. vii, [i], 592 pp. 8vo. Contemporary tree calf, with early re-backing. Front board detached. Bookplate. First Dublin edition. vii, [i], 592 pp. 8vo. First Dublin edition (published the same year as the London edition) of the account of the newlywed Mrs. Piozzi's tour of the continent with her husband. Her "first work not to fall under the long shadow of Johnson, she built upon previous experimentation by using an authoritative but conversational discourse, alive with present-tense immediacy, to erode the barriers between diary and travel narrative. Her delight in Piozzi and in Italy was everywhere apparent in the materials she included in this development of the genre, which subverted masculine tropes of the grand tourist as disillusioned and hard to please" (ODNB). Her descriptions of Italy were a source for Ann Radcliffe's MYSTERIES OF UDOLPHO.
