Boards in full calf leather with an ornately gilt-tooled spine; spine with raised bands; gilt emblem of the Liverpool Institute Schools emblazoned on the front cover; edges of boards gilt tooled. Covers have some damp-spotting; darkening along top edge. All text block edges marbled. Marbled endpapers. School gift plate dated 1867 on front paste-down, else interior is clean and unmarked. pp. xii, 242. Biography of Oliver Goldsmith, the author of The Vicar of Wakefield and a close friend of Samuel Johnson's, by Washington Irving (1783-1859). Includes Irving's preface for his revised edition of 1849.
