Description:
Stanford White was an American architect and partner in the architectural firm of McKim, Mead & White. He designed a long series of houses for the wealthy, and numerous public, institutional, and religious buildings. His design principles embodied the "American Renaissance" and is one of the great American architects of the 19th century.

[St. Elizabeth's, Washington], 1957. Slightly over one page, quarto, on two plain lettersheets. Folded for mailing, otherwise near fine, with envelope (the latter torn from being opened). To John Ordeman, of Alexandria, VA., in response to a solicitation of comments on education or advice to writers for the literary magazine, THE DAEMON. Pound writes, in part: "...This is for your personal use, as I cannot be quoted from bughouse. I have spent 50 years trying to define a sane curriculum. You realize that u.s. education was befouled ... I believe according to a definite plan of corruption ... When they took out greek and latin, they started for hell and corruption. BY neglecting the INSIDES OF Shakespear / attending only to fancy adjectives / coupling a real author like Sh with a bloater named Milton etc they let in the jungle/ ...." He continues, referring to his "text book," Keats, Homer, Dante, and "proper paideuma." He notes: I shd/ also permit myself distinction BETWEEN myself, Eliot and joyce. ... Take Forrest Read / that the Cantos have driven him to look INTO such a damned lot of ignota ...." He concludes with an invitation to come visit him, with specifics for necessary arrangements. Signed in full and dated in ink, with scattered corrections. Accompanied by a typed account by the recipient of the circumstances of the letter, and recollections of the meeting with Pound that resulted.

Dans le premier billet, il indique à son correspondant (Jean-Paul Brunet, critique à l'hebdomadaire "Le Mondain bordelais") que l'édition tirée à part de "Jeanne" est épuisée depuis longtemps mais que l'on peut trouver ses poésies chez Lemerre. Il regrette de ne plus voir son père, mais en a des nouvelles par Daniel de Sèze. Dans le second billet, il remercie Jean-Paul Brunet pour tout le bien qu'il dit de ses poèmes. Bel état. , . 5 1/8" x 6 3/4" signed letter from Robert Dale Owen (1801-1877) dated May 5, 1865 at Cincinnati and addressed to publishers Mssrs. Tickner & Fields, acknowledging receipt of $50 as payment for his article on Hofwyl appearing in Atlantic Magazine that month, a fond history of his years at Hofwyl school, the independent self-governing private college in Switzerland to which Owen credited the molding of much of his character and philosophy. In addition to his notorious involvement with social reforms, Robert Dale Owen served in the Indiana legislature and the U.S. House Of Representatives (1843 to 1847), where he introduced and secured passage of the bill to establish the Smithsonian Institution, for which he was appointed to its first board of regents. Never without controversy, in the 1850 ‘s he turned to spiritualism, and while his book on the subject, "Footfalls On The Boundary Of Another World" was popular with the general public, it incurred ridicule from a number of his…
