Boston: Ticknor and Fields, 1863. First American Edition. First printing, with ads facing final page of text, and "myterious" on p.145. Octavo (19cm). Brown blindstamped cloth, all edges stained dull orange; chocolate brown endpapers; [xii], [9]-398,[2]pp; one page of publisher's ads at rear. In custom brown morocco and cloth slipcase. Straight, with light wear at corners and base of spine both hinges cracking, occasional spots of foxing: around Very Good.

Hawthorne worked as a consul in Liverpool for four years, after having written Franklin Pierce's campaign biography; this book collects excerpts from his British notebooks. The British and American editions were issued simultaneously on 19 September. CLARK A24.1.a. BAL7626, first state.
