About This Item
Very good copy of this rare suite of fashion plates by the prolific Louis-Marie Lanté
With 39 (of 47) hand-coloured fashion plates showing the elegant costumes of Parisian female workers and tradeswomen of the 1820s
No title page or text as usual.
It's likely that Lanté drew these women in the streets and stores of Paris as they went about their work. A student dancer strikes a pose, a presser irons lace cloth on a table, an art student carries a box of oil paints, and a sutler to the National Guard offers a dram. There is a maid, laundrywoman, chambermaid, servant and nanny. There are many modistes: a fashionable embroiderer, knitter, seamstress, straw-hat maker, dressmaker, milliner, cobbler, hair braider, cosmetic seller and a shopgirl. There are also many itinerant tradeswomen including a florist, crockery seller, oyster shucker, haberdasher, dairywoman and plaisir (sweet) seller offering their wares.
According to Rene Colas, "This is one of the most interesting series drawn by Lanté. The last five engravings are very rare."
The copy on the SPL Hand Coloured Rare Book Collection website has only 41 plates.
Louis-Marie Lanté, 1789-1871, was a French painter, a pupil of Vaudoyer, and exhibited at the Salons from 1824 to 1838. He was the most prolific artist for Pierre de la Mésangère's famous Journal des Dames et des Modes for which he drew 1,466 fashion plates in watercolor from 1814 to 1829, many engraved by Georges-Jacques Gatine. He also drew suites of regional and historical costume plates including Costumes of Caux 1827, Costumes of Hamburg 1827, Galerie des Femmes 1827, etc. All his books are very rare.
Georges-Jacques Gatine, 1773-c.1841, was a French engraver and etcher who specialized in costume plates and worked extensively with Lanté.
