The first scholarly work on the overland mail: Establishment of the Postal Service; the Ocean Mail to the Pacific Coast; pioneer monthly mails to the inter-mountain region, the Butterfield Overland Mail; increases in mail line routes (1857-59); service to the Pike's Peak region; the Pony Express, and much more. "The definitive study of an important phase of early Western social and political development" (Wheat). This was the first book published by the Clark company for this author. The Argonaut Book Shop was founded in 1941 in the middle of the financial district of San Francisco. The Argonaut was a founding member of the Antiquarian Booksellers\' Association of America and has been a member in good standing ever since. The Shop is now located just three blocks from Union Square in downtown San Francisco and is open six days a week. Parking facilities include ample street space and a parking garage close by.
