About This Item

London: The Leadenhall Press, Ltd. Good+ with no dust jacket. 1898. First Edition. Hardcover. 1898-99. Clean dark blue boards with bright gilt titling and illustration to front cover and to spine. The tips of the corners lightly bumped, tail of spine has 3 'nicks', bottom edges lightly rubbed. Top edge gilt, Remaining fore-edges toned with age and foxed. Hinges sound, but inner rear paper hinge splitting. A handsome looking copy. Internally a presentation note in fading ink, dated 1902, to the front free endpaper. Lacks the small (just under 2" x 2") 'dutch paper' sample on page 8, as is often the case (the publishers' state "if the supply runs out ...they will replace it with an 'engraved block' ") Neither got done in this case - or someone removed the paper? . Tissue guarded frontispiece, black and white illustrated title page and illustrations. Foxing (pale tan spots) mainly to the first few pages, the tissue guard and particularly to the page edges. 510pp plus 24 pp Publisher's Catalogue to end of book. The integral yellow ribbon (silk? ) bookmark is still present but freying and detatched from the binding. Overall, apart from the foxing as noted above, internally clean tight and bright. A most attractive book, full of title pages, b/w illustrations and extracts from many forgotten children's books. A wonderful source for old childrens books. See Images. ; 8vo 7.5" - 8" tall. .
