About This Item

San Francisco: California Book Company, 1915. Hardcover. ix, 151p., b&w photographic plates and a small map of the grounds, 6.5x4.5 inch salmonpink cloth boards with mild external hand-soil and edgewear, slight browning within and a narrow gutter-gap at front hinge, a good (good-only) copy: generally sound, clean and unmarked. The "symbolism" the author explains has a lot to do with being high-minded about statues such as "The Rising Sun" (a very naked guy with wings) and "Descending Night" and "Earth" (naked women). Concerning the riser, James observes that "This fresh strong young sun is just about to start on his journey... the wind blowing thru his hair, the vigor of young life pulsating thru his body, he will start the chest forward and move those outstretched wings. WALK TOWARDS HIM [emphasis in the original] and you will see him begin his journey thru space" -- a nice interactive touch. Also find on p.9 a discussion of the architectural building-blocks of exhibit sites, namely "artificial travertine" (not merely chicken-wire slathered in plaster of Paris, as we had suspected).
