About This Item

Farrar, Straus and Giroux, New York, 2015. First Edition. Softcover. Very Good Condition. Illustrator: Illustrated. Map of the Hawaiian Islands, notes, glossary, gods and personages, bibliography and index. At the beginning of the text is a double page map showing the Hawaiian archipelago and a smaller map showing its position within the Pacific region. The text is illustrated with black and white reproductions of historic drawings and the occasional black and white map. Colour illustrated paperback binding with white coloured titles to the front panel and back strip. Colour photograph of author to the rear panel and the same photograph has been reproduced, black-and-white, to the top edge of the half title page. "The history of Hawai'i may be said to the story of arrivals – from the first party seeds that found their way to the Islands, to the early Polynesian adventurers, to the pious Protestant missionaries of the nineteenth century – all washed ashore, sometimes by accident. There myths and legends shape our understanding of this mysterious chain of islands adrift in the North Pacific. <snip> - a place of kings and queens, gods and goddesses, missionaries, migrants, and explorers – to tell of an isolated pagan world of human sacrifice and tripped taboo suddenly confronted with the equally ritualised values of capitalism, Western education, and Christian belief." – from rear panel blurb. A little creasing of the book corners and rubbing of the edges. Full Number Line. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. [17], 4 - 303, [3] pages,. Please refer to accompanying picture (s).
