Inscribed to Richard Monkton Milnes, English poet and patron of literature who advanced the careers of Tennyson and Emerson in Britain, and was one of the earliest champions of Swinburne, as well as Patmore, with whom Milnes had secured his (Patmore's) long-standing tenure at the British Museum. On the top of the title-page: R. M. Milnes, Esq. From Coventry Patmore.
