About This Item
Washington and London: Smithsonian Institution Press. Near Fine with No dust jacket as issued. 1990. Hardcover. 0874746787 . Rust cloth with gilt title. xiii, 273 Pages. Illustrated. Literature Cited. Index. Minor wear to ends and corner tips. Abstract: This book presents the results of an assessment of the health of wild-living chimpanzees, gorillas (including mountain gorilla remains collected by the late Dian Fossey) , and orangutans through the study of pathological conditions of their bones and teeth. These primates were killed in the wild and their remains housed at the National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution. Dental pathology is marked by a high frequency of alveolar destruction in the mountain gorilla, and a high frequency of carious lesions and antemortem tooth loss among chimpanzees. Skeletal pathology is widespread and predominated by lesions of traumatic origin, mainly healed fractures. Arthritic lesions are conspicuous in the vertebral column and at the sacroiliac and temporomandibular joints in all genera. The frequency of chronic infectious disease is low. ; 8vo .
