About This Item

Richmond, Surrey: The Hogarth Press,, 1923. First edition, first impression, one of 900 copies hand-printed by the Woolfs, being a collection of articles and essays Forster wrote about his time in Alexandria, during which he met and fell in love with a young Egyptian man, Mohammed el Adl. The final chapter features the first appearance in English of C. P. Cavafy's work, including some of his most famous poems, "The God Abandons Anthony", "The City", and "Ithaka", translated by George Valassopoulos. It is here that Forster's memorable first impression of Cavafy appears: "a Greek gentleman in a straw hat, standing absolutely motionless at a slight angle to the universe". The articles were originally published between 1921 and 1923 for the British newspaper, The Nation and Athenaum, owned by Leonard Woolf (Advani, p. 16). The binding appeared in two states: with the royal blue design running horizontally (as with this copy) or vertically, with no priority between the two. Octavo. Original blue cloth-backed patterned blue boards, printed paper title label to spine. Board edges a little toned, else bright, light rubbing and wear to extremities, top edge dusty, foxing to edges, affecting a few margins, contents otherwise clean and free from marks. A very good copy. Woolmer 29.
