About This Item

New York: D Appleton and Company, 1872-74. First edition. Leather. Very Good. 13" by 10". Various. The complete two volumes of this popular travel text. A beautifully illustrated series which grew out of an earlier series in Appleton's Journal. The volumes describe and illustrate the scenery of America. The layout and concept is similar to the previously published Picturesque Europe. With nine hundred vignette and full page wood engravings alongside fifty steel engravings across both volumes. Collated, complete. The engravings display the work of some of the best American landscape painters of the nineteenth century. The work is primarily Henry Fenn's and his friend Douglas Woodward. However other artists include John Frederick Kensett, James David Smillie, Thomas Moran, Granville Perkins and dozens more. Edited by romantic poet and journalist William Cullen Bryant, also known as the editor for the New York Evening Post. This text is thought to have had a profound influence of the growth of tourism and the historic preservation movement in the United States. In full morocco bindings with gilt stamping to the boards and spines. Externally, smart with rubbing to the extremities, joints and spines. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright with some scattered spotting throughout. Very Good

Synopsis

Picturesque America   was first published by Appleton's as a serial, received semi-monthly by subscribers. Once their subscription was complete, the serials would be bound into a two-volume set, a variety of binding options available for the original 1872 and 1874 books.  Picturesque America  took readers on a tour of America through art and writing. It included 65 essays written by various authors, and was illustrated by 900 wood and 50 steel engravings. The engravings were done by variety of high skilled artists off of original drawings, mostly composed by artist Harry Fenn, the most prominent landscape illustrator in the US at the time.
