About This Item

London: Duckworth, 1932. 1st Edition 1st Printing. Hardcover. Good. First UK edition, first printing. Hardback, bound in the original yellow cloth with printed titling to spine. 19 × 12.5cm, 240pp. The author's first novel, published in France in 1930 as La Femme de Pilate is described in the biographical note at the start of the book as a modern version of the story of Jesus Christ, "his aim being to show the influence of religious disputes on the French 'Pilates' of our own time and so to increase our understanding of Rome's similar difficulties in the administration of Palestine and of British difficulties in Jerusalem". Condition: A good copy. There is some darkening to the boards' edges and some tanning to the page edges but the book remains in strong readable condition. This book is part of an archive of books from Duckworth & Co, and was in the possession of Alice Thomas Ellis, the author, who was fiction editor. Duckworth & Co was run by her husband Colin Haycraft who had purchased it from Tom Balston. (Provenance: Trevanion & Dean)
