A Fine original hand-colored aquatint; engraved, printed and colored by Robert Havell, Jr. after John James Audubon's original watercolor for the Double Elephant Folio Edition of The Birds of America, published in London between 1824 and 1838. Image size: 18 x 10.25 inch, Plate mark: 19 3/4 x 12 3/8 inch, Sheet size: 37 7/8 x 24 3/4 inches. J. Whatman 1836 watermark. A charming pair of life-sized Little Auks depicted on the Northern Atlantic Coast between 1832-33. The protective male is perched on a rocky outcropping hovering over the swimming female Auk below. The female is feeding on a crayfish. The background for this composition, engraved by R. Havell, was inspired the mountainous Polar landscapes depicted in the Captain James Cook's Third Voyage: A Voyage to the Pacific Ocean undertaken for making Discoveries in the Northern Hemisphere. London, 1784. Matted in Rag Board
