About This Item
"Plymouth Pulpit" - The Sermons of HENRY WARD BEECHER in Plymouth Church, Brooklyn. 1872; J.B. Ford & Company; New York. Three-quarter leather binding with marbled covers and gilt lettering and bands on the spine. There are advertisements for New York businesses interspersed within the sermons. The volumes appear to have been custom-bound with sermons taken from various sources (the page numbers don't chronologically follow - for example, the first volume begins with page 37 and continues to page 480, but then a new section begins with a new collection of sermons with pages numbered 25-39, followed by another section of sermons with pages numbered 7-22). The second volume does not have a title page.
Condition:
Clean covers; rubbing to the leather on the spines. Tight binding with no loose pages. There is a crack at the front hinge of volume 1 between the end paper and pastedown (despite the crack, the front cover is still firmly attached and is not at all shaky). The text pages are in excellent condition - mostly clean and white except for volume 2 where pages 309-317 have a quarter-sized stain spot at the top edge, and page 313 has a 2.5" tear at the outer edge. Foxing to the front and rear end papers and pastedowns of both volumes. Each front pastedown has a nice previous owner's bookplate affixed. Overall the volumes are in Very Good- condition.
