There is a very tiny closed tear at the top of the spine and the beginnings of a split between pages 159 and 160. Very minor bumping to corners, but an unusually fine, bright copy. Webb, Bibliography of Thomas Hardy, pp. 35-36. This title was issued in two bindings, as Webb notes: dark green ribbed cloth, T.E.G; and white buckram with gilt edges. "The difference is one of size," he writes, "the cloth being about quarter-of-an-inch taller than the buckram."
