Yeats was one of the prominent and influential poets of the 20th century. Although he populated his earlier poems with Irish legends and fairy lore, his later poems exhibited a deep engagement with society and the world of politics. Throughout his career, he varied his diction, tone, rhythm, and themes, gaining acclaim in Ireland, England, and U.S. In the introduction of the present edition, Tindall writes, "What distinguishes Yeats from his contemporaries is a grandeur and nobility at once foreign to our time and responsive to it" (v).
