New York: Harper & Brothers, 1872. First U.S. Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Near Fine/No Jacket, As Issued. Tall 8vo., (9),10-196pp., (4 pp. ads) Beautiful First American Edition published just after the British Edition in the same year. Publisher's original dark green pebbled cloth with titles in gilt on spine. Preliminary ad page present as called for. Tissue-guarded frontis of the author, followed by tissue-guarded illustration from the story. Other in-text illustrations by Edward Hughes. Double-column text. Square, tight and clean throughout with supple pages and no foxing. Unfaded spine and spine titles. Quite mild shelf-wear. Wear to spine ends and tips with slight loss of cloth. A few minor spots of discoloration. Still a bright fresh example and uncommon in such high-grade condition. A gorgeous collectable copy. (Hubin p. 88).
