A virtuso performance by Edmund Joseph Sullivan, a painter, watercolorist, draughtsman, lithographer, engraver, art critic and teacher. His early association with The Daily Graphic launched his fame and established him "as one of the foremost illustrators of his time, although eclipsed by Rackham and Dulac. He was a superb draughtsman, especially in chalks and had a strong and inventive imagination" - House, p. 470. A superb character study of the the young Hawthorne, leaning against a mantlepiece, a quill in hand, beneath a portrait of Washington.
