Translated from the Portuguese By Barbara Shelby. The 1st Edition of this Brazilian writer's second novel. Set in Brazil in the 1960s, the story of an unworldly priest transformed by his compassion into a 20th-century revolutionary.
KIRKUS REVIEW:
A giant, inventive, symbolically ponderous novel about the malaise of Brazil, around the time of the March 1964 military coup. The protagonist is the priest Nando, within whose own soul deaths and transfigurations, Brazilian agonies and emergences, are stated and repeated. From a crypt of bones, a hard Christ of Judgment and his first knowledge of an ancient Marian Christianity--without Christ, Nando begins his journey into life. He travels to a tribe of primitive Indians, led by Fontoura, an angry cherubim guarding primeval innocence and vitality. In a strange expedition through the jungle the Brazilians search for a white woman who had left the settlement with an Indian, but the woman, though never found, reveals her mythic transmogrification through shreds of clothes and bizarre rumors of Trojan wars between the tribes. Fontoura dies appropriately at a milling anthill geographically at the ""heart of Brazil." Nando, by this time having left the Church and celibacy, experiences first hand degradation, torture and the bitterness of military oppression as he returns to aid exploited farm workers. A frequent visitor to a whorehouse where he explores further sacred and profane love, Nando again courts death from the police in a celebration of the sacrifice of the worker, Levindo. At the last, having been brutally beaten, he realizes the triumph of life in the radiant Marian principle as he takes on the identity of the dead Levindo. A Minotaur of design and intent in a formidable labryinth of expostulations and characters used rather than realized.
