'A Time of Cherries" tells the story of Ronald Millar's life and work with the tunny-fishermen of Santez Edwette, a small village on the southern coast of Brittany. As far as he knows, he was the first-and perhaps the only-non-Breton to be allowed to undertake the cruel, back-breaking work of a tunny-fisherman, and today, knowing the Bretons better, he sees his success as little short of miraculous. His story is of an unfamiliar way of life which has now gone for ever. It is told with style, humour and compassion, and is filled with magnificent Breton characters. Their dour lives are shaped by the great black and silver fish which provide both the fisherman's daily bread and his dreams of wealth and success. .
