" Je relis, Monsieur, en arrivant à Paris, la bonne, aimable et longue lettre que j'ai reçue de vous en courant les chemins de notre aimable Languedoc. Quoi vous auriez accepté une place dans une pauvre catèdre ? … Combien j'aurais été heureux ! mais pourtant le temps ne vous aurait-il pas manqué ? Je n'ai pu voir ni St Rémy, ni St Gilles ; j'ai vu Aigues-Mortes, merveille du treizième siècle, coincée toute entière sur nos rivages. J'ai aperçu la Camargue qui seule mériterait un voyage exprès et où l'on retrouverait des villes oubliées. Enfin que voulez-vous ? J'ai couru, j'ai passé vite. Ne vaut-il pas mieux avoir peut-être laissé derrière moi quelques regrets que la fatigue de ma personne ?
Je ne voudrais pour rien au monde avoir causé de l'ennui à mademoiselle Cécile et Honorine.
J'ai vu hier un moment madame Récamier et M. Ballanche.
Vous avez bien voulu leur écrire, ils sont charmés de vous ; ils voudraient vous voir à Paris. M.B est à la campagne, j'irai déjeuner chez lui un de ces jours pour lui parler de vous comme vous le méritez et je ne sais ce que je donnerais pas pour que quelque chose de convenable put vous amener à Paris. J'aurai l'honneur de vous écrire aussitôt que je saurai ce qu'il y a de possible. J'ai terminé ma course par le Golfe Juan ; j'y suis arrivé la nuit. Vous jugez ce que devaient être pour moi cette nuit, le ciel, cette mer solitaire et silencieuse ; j'avais devant moi les îles de Lérins où la civilisation chrétienne a commencé et je foulais cette grève où Bonaparte a imprimé son dernier pas.
Tous mes respects, je vous prie à madame votre mère, mes hommages à mademoiselle [Honorine] Gasc et si vous voyez madame de Castelbague, ayez la bonté de me rappeler à son souvenir.

It was on the advice of his doctors that Chateaubriand made a journey to the South in the early summer of 1838. The writer, then seventy years old, took the opportunity to document the writing of his Memoirs but did not linger in the Bouches-du-Rhône, having in his sights Golfe-Juan, starting point of the Cent-jours on March 1, 1815.
Chateaubriand's feelings towards the emperor were complex. Although he worked as ambassador in the service of the latter during the Consulate, the assassination of the Duc d'Enghien created a breaking point between the two men. His fascination for the Emperor was no less strong, to the point that he went in his footsteps to Golfe-Juan at the end of July 1838, as recounted in this letter, twenty-three years after the beginning of the Hundred Days. As he recounted in Mémoires d'outre-tombe: "I left the beach, in a kind of religious consternation, letting the tide pass and repass, without erasing it, in the footsteps of Napoleon's penultimate step."
