About This Item

Boston: Charles C. Little and James Brown, 1841. First edition. pp. 73. 1 vols. 8vo. Removed. Light browning on title page. First edition. pp. 73. 1 vols. 8vo. A Nice Association Copy. Nathan Appleton (1779-1861) was an American merchant and politician who served in the United States House of Representatives from 1831-1833 and again in 1842. He was one of the founders of the Merrimack Manufacturing Company. He was a strong advocate of the national bank and of protective duties. This pamphlet by Appleton is a celebrated treatise advocating for a national bank.

Robert C. Winthrop (1809-1894), to whom this pamphlet is inscribed, was a lawyer and philanthropist who published a "Memoir of Nathan Appleton" in 1861. He was also at one time Speaker of the House of Representatives, and in fact succeeded to Appleton's vacated seat in Congress in November of 1842. He was the last Speaker of the House who was neither a Democrat nor a Republican (he was a Whig), and was a patron of the Boston Public Library.

The inscription by Appleton, on the title page, reads "Hon. R. C. Winthrop / with respects of the Author
