Holdsworth called Foster's book the "most remarkable and most scholarly of all the reports" of the eighteenth century. The four discourses (on high treason, homicide, accomplices in capital offenses, and observations on some passages in Hale's History of the Pleas of the Crown) have always been considered of high authority.
