About This Item

London: Ladd. VG+ book. 1st ed. 7"x5", (1-7),8-56,(Ladd's ad slip),(2ads)pp.. [Sept 1866]. 1st book ed.. Hardcover. VG+ book. Originally tightly bound, a 2022 rebind to facilitate viewing the photos, retaining gilt lettered black pebbled cloth. . Barbara Becker's award winning 2011 "UNRAVELLING STARLIGHT, William and Margaret Huggins" on p.23 states: "Of all the early spectroscopists, the one individual who did the most to shape the emerging disciplinary boundaries of astrophysics was the English amateur astronomer William Huggins. He was the first to observe emission lines in the spectra of nebulae." The observed spectra, photos of the drawings of which are glued into this book, was so ground breaking he and W.A. Miller in 1867 were jointly awarded a Royal Astronomcal Society gold medal. Book contains 18 images split among 17 (tp states 18) albumen photos. P.13 photo is of two views of the spectrograph. Our copy, Wellesley College's copy and the Christies 16 Jun 2008 auction copy, all have p.13 with both views in but a single photo. P.13 of the Hathitrust copy and that of Christies 3 Oct 2002 are of same two views BUT photographed separately. These views then pasted side by side onto p.13. Of 14 US libraries with copies 10 have the two views in one photo, the other four of the same two views but in two different photos. TO BETTER UNDERSTAND THE DIFFERENCE compare our scan #5, the ONLINE Hathitrust and both Christies copies. Flaws: Minor aging. EX LIBRARY. There are three 2" stamps of the "Apprentice's Library New York City". Wikipedia: "it is the 2nd oldest NYC library". ABPC had listed only 2 copies auctioned between 1910 and 2022, the 2002 & 2008 Christies. Others unsold. RBH confirms this, adding that a dealer's 1997 catalog listed a copy for sale. 1ST ED IN BOOK FORM. GO TO BIBLIO FOR 7 MORE SCANS. .
