The illustration consists of a series of 50 superb color watercolor reproductions, mounted on strong paper. all bound consecutively at the end with the exception of the frontispiece. This copy is one of the unnumbered, unsigned copies reserved for presentation. Large 4to. Full publisher's ivory vellum with gilt lettering and vignettes. Top edge gilt and others untrimmed, titles and pictorial decoration to spine and front board gilt, publisher's device to rear board in blind, dark green endpapers, all edges green. Tipped-in color frontispiece and 49 similar plates with printed tissue guards, vignettes to title page and head- and tailpieces in black and white.

Synopsis

The Legend of Sleepy Hollow first appeared in a story collection by Irving called  The Sketch-Book Of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent. This first classic collection of American short stories also featured the popular Rip Van Winkle . The fantastical portions of Irving's works were inspired not only by his travels around Europe and hearing old folk tales and mythology, but also by a visit to upstate New York in the Catskill Mountains as a youth. His exposure to the old Dutch customs and ghost stories around Tarrytown, New York planted the seeds for his Headless Horseman character.
