Blackie and Son Ltd, London, Glasgow and Dublin, No date. Edition Unstated. Hardcover (Original Cloth). Very Poor/No Dust Jacket. Illustrator: W.Parkinson. XII, 384 pages, 32 pages following with Blackie & Son's book catalogue, list of illustrations. Gray coloured endpapers. Black and white illustrated frontispiece by W.Parkinson. Within the text there are another in 11 illustrations by the same artist, small illustrated header to the beginning of the book. Green cloth boards with gilt lettering and image of a boy and dog stamped in black and darker green. Gilt writing and decoration to the spine. All page edges have been tinted an olive green. The book is in very rough shape, commensurate with age and a lot of usage. Bumping, rubbing and fraying to the head and to the heel of the spine and to the book corners. The book corners have been bumped to the point where the underlying board is visible. The cloth of the book has become rubbed, faded and very worn. The gilt writing on both the spine and front panel has started to wear. Rubbing and shelf wear to both the top and bottom book edges. Marks to the endpapers and the front endpaper has a split measuring 2 " from the lower edge. The hinge has split at both the front and back endpapers, underlying webbing can be seen. Splitting of the book hinges is noticeable throughout the book but more particularly between pages 224-225, 240-241, 320-321, 336-337 and 352-353, where the text block has become unstable. Throughout the book there is foxing and quite numerous handling marks. Rubbing to the book edges. Gift inscription to the verso of the free front endpaper. A late 19th century children's book by one the early writers for children George MacDonald. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Please refer to accompanying picture (s). Illustrator: W.Parkinson.
