Hartford, CT: American Pub. Co, 1872. First Edition, First Printing. The First Printing with page 242, lines 20-21, having 'Premises-said he/was occupying his", later printing having the words 'he' and 'his' lacking. With ads on page [592]. (BAL #3337.) By Subscription Only. Large Octavo, 591 pages, page of ads. Bound in the publisher's gilt cloth binding. In very good condition aside for the main point of wear being that the binding is covered in a clear protective jacket, that has been adhered to the binding, and would require a professional conservator to remove. This is still the First Printing of this desirable book, in the publisher's original binding, it is just sealed behind this mylar dust jacket. It could be peeled off, but likely would result in substantial wear, unless undertaken by an expert conservator. Though potentially distracting, it does serve the purpose of protecting this rare title. There is generalized usage wear, binding is somewhat loose, a little shaken, but still tightly bound. There are no previous signs ownership. Near free of foxing. The fragile tissue paper is present, but foxed. Some general usage wear. The hinges are sound, though internal hinge paper with some separation. This is the First Printing of Roughing it, complete and intact. Clemens' rambling reminiscences of his journey by overland stage from Missouri to Nevada and California and his later travels in the Hawaiian Islands, where he lived for seven years. "Valuable as an autobiographical chapter in the author's life and as a vivid portrayal of Nevada mining life in the '60s" (HOWES C481.) First Printing as described in BAL.: With page 242, lines 20-21, having 'Premises-said he/was occupying his", later printing having the words 'he' and 'his' lacking. With ads on page [592]. and 4 additional textual points: 1). "M" in "My" page xi is okay; 2). Capital "E" in eastern on page 330, line 23; 3). Capital "T" in trees on page 156; 4). "thirteenth" instead of "sixteenth" on page 156; (BAL #3337.) All books are professionally wrapped and padded, to help ensure safe handling during transit. We regularly ship internationally. And, we offer a full refund guarantee, per our terms as described on our site, with notification of such intent requested. Additional photographs are available. Please contact us with any inquiries.
