About This Item

First Edition.

xxxi, 216 p.; ill., 60 plates; 24 cm. Includes Index (pp. 209-216).

Blue cloth hardcover shows moderate wear, including but not limited to sunning to both covers and spine, and is slightly shaken. The top foredge is coloured blue, and he other edges are deckled. Apart from the aforementioned and the expected aging of paper, the book is in Near Fine condition, bright, clear, clean, and illustrated profusely with artwork, diagrams, and portraits.

This book hails from the library of Dr. James Wellington Crane (1877-1959), bearing an illustrated book plate to that effect, and his signature on the title page. The book also sports a stamp from the Department of Public Welfare, Geriatric Centre in Toronto, where it was donated as part of the Dr. James W. Crane Collection, and a few library markings in pen and pencil. The rear free endpaper contains a handwritten note and a pasted clipping of what appears to be the 1941 ad from a used book salesman in 1941 from whom Crane purchased this copy. More on Dr. Crane and his contributions to medical education, as well as his book collecting, can be found here: https://www.slideshare.net/DerekTustin/jw-crane-biography

From the Preface:

The present volume, however, is concerned chiefly with the physical and legal difficulties which, prior to the year 1832, attended the study of anatomy within the domain of the United kingdom, and brief mention is made,
en passant, of the rise and status of anatomical science in North America.

Scans of the table of contents, list of illustrations, and other features are available upon request.
